Sion: Two shot dead in Swiss town |

Two people have been killed and a third injured in a shooting in a southern Swiss town, police have said.

Police in the Valais canton said the suspect fired several shots in two different locations in Sion, a town of about 35,000 people not far from the Italian and French borders.

Authorities were alerted to a wounded person in a parking area at 7.15am and they arrived to find a woman with a fatal gunshot wound. A man was shot dead a few minutes later and a woman was wounded.

The force said they had deployed officers to arrest the male gunman, who has not been identified.

They said he appears to have known his victims, but did not give further details.

Police issued an appeal for people to come forward with any information on a 36-year-old believed to be the gunman and warned people he may be armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

Local prosecutors have opened a murder investigation.

Regional newspaper La Nouvelliste reported that shots were fired at a paint company’s premises and at another location.

Switzerland, a country of around nine million people, has a high level of gun ownership.

Swiss Arms Survey, a Switzerland-based organisation that monitors global trends in armed violence, estimates civilians in the country possess 2.3 million firearms.
