The U.S.-led coalition bombed the militants from the air, damaging the prison, and deployed ground forces to try to hold the perimeter. According to the United Nations, the fighting in and around the prison complex displaced as many as 45,000 people across Hasakah, most of them taking shelter with family or friends. A citywide lockdown is in place, and those who stayed in the Ghwaryan and Zouhour districts, close to the prison, have been left without access to medical treatment, potable water, or bread and fuel supplies.
