British man found dead in Crete after lying motionless on sunbed for hours |

A British man who had not moved from his sunbed in Crete for hours has reportedly been found dead by beach officials.

The 54-year-old tourist was said to have been motionless on his bed for hours on Saturday in the area of Stalida.

Rescuers performed CPR without any success and the man was officially confirmed dead at hospital, according to local news service Creta Post.

No further details have been released.

Stalida – also known as Stalis – has a renowned beach which is popular with families.

The resort is on the northern coast of Crete, situated between Malia and Hersonissos.

The death came as high temperatures across Europe saw firefighters in Crete tackle a blaze which surged through forest farmland on Saturday.

A total of 71 fires were reported to have broken out within a 24-hour period amid the continuing drought conditions.

The high temperatures, which have exceeded 45C (113F) in Spain, have been blamed for the deaths of hundreds of people.
