In 2014, Russia annexed the Crimea region from Ukraine — and it has continued to back pro-Moscow separatists in the eastern part of the country. Russia says that it is worried about NATO’s eastward expansion into what it considers its sphere of influence, and in a news conference in December, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated a demand that the West bar Ukraine and other post-Soviet republics from joining the alliance.
